Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Ultrasonic testing finds flaws buried inside metal that no visual inspection can reach. A probe injects high-frequency sound into the material; anything that interrupts that sound — a crack, a lack of fusion, a lamination, an inclusion — reflects part of it back. From the timing and size of that echo, our inspectors determine what the flaw is, how deep it sits, and how large it is.

Unlike radiography, UT needs access to only one side of the material and involves no radiation. That means no exclusion zone, no evacuation of surrounding work, and no night shift scheduled around a radiation permit — an important practical advantage on a busy yard or an operating plant.

What UT Detects

  • Lack of fusion and incomplete penetration in welds
  • Cracks — including toe, root, and hydrogen-induced cracking
  • Slag inclusions and porosity
  • Laminations in plate and rolled sections
  • Wall loss and internal corrosion
  • Bonding defects in clad and composite materials

Where We Apply It

  • Pressure vessels and boilers — butt welds, nozzle welds, and shell seams
  • Process and transmission piping — girth welds and branch connections
  • Structural steelwork — full-penetration welds in offshore and fabrication work
  • Ship structures — hull welds, brackets, and connections
  • Plate and forging inspection — lamination checks before fabrication begins

How We Work

  1. Procedure and acceptance criteria — we agree the applicable code and acceptance standard with you before mobilising, so results can be judged against an agreed benchmark.
  2. Calibration — equipment is calibrated on reference blocks appropriate to the material, thickness range, and probe angle in use.
  3. Scanning — welds are scanned with compression and angle beam probes as the geometry requires, covering the weld and the heat-affected zone.
  4. Evaluation — indications are characterised, located, and sized, then assessed against the acceptance criteria.
  5. Reporting — findings are documented with clear location references so any repair can be directed to the exact spot.
