Radiographic Testing (RT)

Radiographic testing passes radiation through a weld and records what comes out the other side. Where the metal is sound, less radiation gets through; where there is a void, a crack, or a slag inclusion, more does — and that difference appears on the radiograph. The result is a permanent image of the inside of the weld, readable by anyone qualified to interpret it.

RT remains the reference method in many fabrication codes and is often the technique a client, a class surveyor, or a regulator specifically asks for. It is particularly good at showing volumetric flaws — porosity and slag — and at producing a record that is easy to review and archive.

What RT Detects

  • Porosity and gas pockets
  • Slag inclusions and foreign material
  • Incomplete penetration and lack of fusion
  • Cracks, where favourably oriented to the beam
  • Undercut, excess penetration, and other profile defects
  • Wall loss and internal deposits in piping

Where We Apply It

  • Pressure vessel and boiler welds — where code compliance requires radiography
  • Pipeline and process piping girth welds — including small-bore work
  • Structural and fabrication welds — acceptance testing before delivery
  • Castings — detection of shrinkage, porosity, and inclusions
  • In-service piping — profile radiography for corrosion under insulation and deposits

Safety and Site Planning

Radiography involves ionising radiation, and that shapes how the work is planned. An exclusion zone must be established and monitored, surrounding work has to stop, and the operation is frequently scheduled outside normal shift hours to minimise disruption. We plan this with you in advance so the survey does not stall the rest of your programme.

If the radiation permit, exclusion zone, or shutdown time is the obstacle, phased array and TOFD offer volumetric coverage with no radiation at all. We are happy to advise which route suits your job better — including when the honest answer is that radiography remains the right choice.
